Katy is doodle country

Katy has more doodles per block than just about anywhere else in the Houston area, and doodle coats are the single most common reason people call a groomer in a panic.

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you get the puppy: a doodle's soft puppy coat gets replaced by the adult coat somewhere around 8 to 12 months, and while that's happening the coat mats faster than most owners can keep up with. Brushing over the top of it doesn't help, because the mats form down at the skin where the brush isn't reaching.

The dogs who come through that transition fine are the ones already on a schedule when it starts. Every 4 to 6 weeks for a doodle in a longer cut is normal. Waiting until it looks bad usually means a shave down, because by then the coat can't be brushed out without hurting the dog.

Scheduling around a Katy weekday

Feather Touch grooms Sundays and Mondays, 9 to 5. For a lot of Katy families that works out better than a weekday salon appointment does. Nobody has to leave work early, and nobody has to build the school run around a drop-off and a pickup on opposite ends of the day.

You don't need to be outside while your dog is groomed, and you don't need to be home the whole time either. Most people go about their morning and come to the door when Courtney's finished.
